The European Commission called for a common U-wide fuel and power strategy directed from Brussels and a regulator to break the grip of national governments over energy policy claiming Europe can no longer allow dependence on risky foreign sources rises from 50pc today to 70pc by 2030. The EC Paper on energy proposes £ 687 000 million of fresh investment over the next 20 years to link-up electricity grids and boost home grown sources of fuel, including bio-fuels from crops and nuclear power.
