Northern Border wraps up $839 m Chicago project. M. Aucoin. Pipeline Gas J., January 1999, 226(1), 49--50.

The $839 million Chicago project is a 822 mile 42 in. pipeline carrying Canadian natural gas to the Chicago area. Additions of four compressor stations and a 147 mile 30 in. extension boost the line capacity to 665 million ft3/d. The steel pipe and joints are coated with fusion bonded epoxy and a concrete coating is applied on site. Construction of the pipeline is described and some unique features are reviewed. Fully automated compressor stations are installed to compensate for pressure lost by friction between the gas and the pipe wall. The line is pressurized to ensure maximum operational efficiency. Gas cooling towers prevent deterioration of the pipe coating material.
