Europe's gas distribution, supply industry undergoes change. J.-L. Guizot. Pipeline Gas Ind., February 1999, 82(2), 61--62.

Global energy demand has increased by 60% over the last decade and natural gas is playing an increasingly important role. Expansion of the natural gas industry in Europe is now following developments in the UK. Market trends in the UK are reviewed and summaries are given of the national transmission system, regional transmission systems, and local distribution grids. Developments in Europe include third-party access to gas and electricity networks and are following UK deregulation models that include unbundling of integrated utilities into separate production, transmission, distribution and supply companies. Future requirements for utility operations are reviewed.
