Consideration is given to three major new technologies developed in the heavy-oil regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada---long, shallow horizontal wells, steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), and cold production (CP). CP wells, simultaneous CP/SAGD, CP-well conversion, and process physics and modelling limitations are described.
