Revamp fired heaters to increase capacity. A. Carg. Hydrocarbon Processing, June 1998, 77(6), 67--80.

A typical horizontal tube box fired heater is described and illustrated and revamping projects are discussed. Revamping improves profits by increasing fired heater capacity, fired heater severity, thermal efficiency, and run lengths. A field survey involving data collection and heater inspection under controlled conditions is used to evaluate the efficiency of revamp operations. Case studies describe the revamping of various types of boilers. These include naphtha reboiler heaters, vacuum heaters, a steam superheater in a styrene plant revamped by adding a radiant section, and a vacuum heater with flame impingement problems. Some revamping constraints are reviewed. 7 refs.
