Captain field---a new frontier in competence. Anon. J. Offshore Technol., May 1997 5(2), 43--45.

Details are given of a Texaco-led programme that now includes the first marine standards of competence for personnel in the offshore oil and gas industry. Texaco's competence programme includes standards for marine control room operators, marine deck operators, and marine utilities operators. Various other vocational qualifications, both current and in the process of being introduced are discussed. The Texaco Captain field is currently the only known FPSO/FSU operation in the North Sea with an integrated process of competence-based marine training, simulator events, and workplace assessment. The OPITO review of Texaco's marine standards recognizes them as a first practical marine VQ qualification available for the offshore oil and gas industry.
