Deepwater pipeline repair---weld metal metallurgical and mechanical properties in the depth range 500 msw--1100 msw. V.R. dos Santos, J.C.F. Jorge and J.F. dos Santos. Paper. Proc. Conf., Pipeline technology, Vol. 2, pages 47--59. (See abstract 909 for com

The study reported is part of a major project in which for the first phase bead-on plate welds were carried out using a metal-cored wire with a variety of shielding gas mixtures at pressures 51 bar to 111 bar. The absorption of active gases by the weld metal and the effect of pressure on the resultant chemical composition and weld metal microstructures were assessed. In the second phase groove welds were deposited under pure argon at 51 bar, 71 bar and 91 bar to determine the achievable mechanical properties. The results, which are presented and discussed, indicate that toughness levels similar to those obtained under atmospheric conditions can also be reliably achieved down to 900 msw. 10 refs.
