Details are presented of a major upgrade at the Pernis refinery, The Netherlands. It includes a hydrocarbon and a state-of-the-art gasification unit that will produce electricity and steam from visbreaker tar. Bar charts, schematic illustrations, tabulated and graphical data are presented and discussed. Process options, the Shell Gasification Hydrogen Process (SGHP), soot ash removal, syngas treatment, power, hydrogen production, and environmental issues are described. 2 refs.
