Descriptions are given of the `New Frontiers' and `Barricades' scenarios and their implications they could have for energy demand. `New Frontiers' being a world in which almost revolutionary political and economic reforms are effectively implemented, leading to a transformation of today's poorer countries, and Barricades' is where those with entrenched interests in the status quo mount a campaign against change, bringing about a world of divisions and barriers. Key variables in the outlook for world energy demand are considered.
