Flameless thermal oxidation reduces emissions at California refinery. H.M. Hohl. OGJ, 4 November 1996, 94(45), 77, 78, 80, 83.

Details are given of the way the refinery is using flameless thermal oxidizers to destroy and remove organic air pollutants. Some 99.99% of VOC emissions from refinery pumps have been destroyed at 20% of the cost of replacing the pumps with sealless versions. The process---Thermatrix technology, matrix properties, low emissions, flameproof operation, and a case study are presented and discussed. System reliability, and life-cycle costs are also considered.
