The development is described of a reference value to verify the mechanical integrity of salt cavern wells used in hydrocarbon storage. The supporting research and verification was funded by the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI)---an associate of the salt-cavern industry. Details are included of integrity testing, current practice, SMRI reference value and the performance objective. The objective of the reference value being the verification of the external mechanical integrity of the cavern well. The area covered is determined by final casing (complete or partial), cement bond in casing shoe area, and uncased well.
