Basic understanding of electronics essential for operating personnel. E.A. Reustle. Pipeline Gas Ind., April 1996, 79(4), 37--49 (8 pages).

The increasing use of electrical and electronic equipment in the natural gas industry is described. Particular reference is made to electric motor-driven gas compressors, cathodic protection systems, electronically controlled regulator stations, and digital telemetry systems. Concepts, applications, and terminology are reviewed. Items discussed are measurable quantities, voltage sources, and power and root mean square values. The dielectric properties of some commonly used materials are tabulated. Other electrical components such as capacitors, inductors, semiconductors, transistors and transducers are also discussed. Temperature and pressure effects are considered, and analog controllers, digital systems, telemetry, electrical noise and electrical safety are described.
