New technologies available to pipeline operating companies are reviewed. Upgrading the performance of SCADA control systems by incorporating new open systems is described and benefits are discussed. Key components of an open system are local area networks, data exchanges with external computers, and integration with remote terminal units. New aspects of fibre optics technology are discussed. Gas control operations planning, the integration of automated mapping facilities management and graphic information system technology, and software developments are described. Advances in computer technology suggest that further improvements are a future possibility.
