New approach to wheel/rail lubrication. M.A. Mulvihill, A.C. Witte and S. Kumar. NLGI Spokesm., March 1995, 58(12), 18--24.

The benefits of rail lubrication are described as reduced fuel consumption, increased wheel life, and reduced rail wear. Way-side, on-board and hy-rail lubrication systems are discussed. Effects at the wheel/rail interface, adhesion, and creep are reviewed and a new laboratory test rig is described and illustrated. New lubricants are described and these include a consumable lubricant for the top of rail and a long-lasting lubricant for the gauge face of the rail. Typical properties are shown for each lubricant type. A new system known as SANTRAEN is described for optimizing the application of wheel/rail lubricants and it is controlled by a sophisticated microprocessor system. 6 refs.
