Congress fills DOT safety agenda for gas, liquids lines. J.C. Caldwell. Pipeline Gas Ind., February 1995, 78(2), 21--24.

A review of the safety performance of 1.23 million miles of pipelines shows that pipe lining is by far the safest means of transportation for gas and liquid products. Up to 50% of failures and leaks are due to external causes such as excavation activities, and corrosion is the second largest leak cause. Five-year incident averages are tabulated for gas distribution, gas transmission/gathering, and hazardous liquid lines. Legislative requirements of DOT and the Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) are reviewed. The present status of the OPS regulatory agenda is summarized.
