A new automated mapping (AM) and facilities management (FM) system used by Union Gas Ltd. is described. It is used to control an integrated natural gas storage, transmission, and distribution system in southwest Ontario. 13 160 miles of pipelines serve 632 000 customers. Careful training is needed for successful implementation of the AM/FM procedure. Employee training over a 5-year period is described. The phases involved are classroom hands-on training, on-the-job training, follow-up sessions, and seminar style presentations. A mobile training unit is described.
