Union Gas applies expert system to optimize pipeline. W.G. Sandercock. Pipe Line Ind. September 1994, 77(9), 37--47.

The Union Gas Trafalgar transmission system in southern Ontario is described. It is an 800 mile looped pipeline with 330,000 hp and 4.3 billion ft3/day capacity. Application of an expert system technology saves fuel costs, assists controller training, and permits an expansion of computerized control tools. Operational features are discussed and different operating modes are reviewed. For most flows there are several modes that will work and a ranking process is described for selecting the most appropriate option. Various horsepower options are also discussed. The technology described provides gas control with a useful decision support tool. Savings of $50,000 are reported with one year operation of the expert system.
