New GRI facility focusses on inspection technology R & D. Anon. Pipeline Gas J., July 1994, 221(7), 32--33.
The Gas Research Institute (GRI) pipeline simulation facility in Chicago is described. The main activities are a non-destructive evaluation laboratory, a pull rig, test bed vehicles, and a flow loop. Two 24 in. generic in-line inspection tools for the realistic treating of advanced inspection hardware are described. These are used for magnetic flux leakage inspections and to test other advanced technologies. Related research projects on current and future inspection methods are reviewed. They include improved inspection technologies for finding and sizing cracks and the development of more sophisticated analytical methods and data systems.
