Consideration is given to the interface between marine science and policy making. The QSR being the most comprehensive presentation of the overall ecological status of the North Sea ever produced. The evolution of the preventative approach is discussed and to what extent is the QSR committed to the prevention of marine pollution is considered. Attention being drawn to the distribution of contaminants in sea water; the distribution of contaminants in sediments; distribution of contaminants in biota; input and impacts of contaminants.
