LDC gas management in a deregulated marketplace. J.L. Balthaser. Pipeline Gas J., April 1994, 231(4), 28--34.

The impact of FERC Order 636 on the operations of local distributing companies (LDC) is reviewed. Significant reductions in gas costs and improved control of supply and demand are reported. Effects on the main operating functions are reviewed. These are planning, scheduling, nominating, dispatching, purchasing, reservoir engineering, gas accounting, capacity marketing, contract administration, and gas cost regulatory interface. Each of these aspects is discussed. Operations of a typical LDC are reviewed in relation to supply contracts and planning. A procedure known as Integrated Resource Planning is described and details are given of a complex linear programming model.
