Five-minute chemical engineer. W.J. Korchinski and L.E. Turpin. Hydrocarbon Processing, January 1996, 75(1), 129--133.

A quick and easy approach is recommended for simplifying refinery calculations using miscellaneous pieces of information and applying a few basic rules. The calculation techniques provides quick estimations of possible processing options without the need for advanced computer technology. Four tables give numerical constants of interest to refinery engineers and relationships re defined in the form of mathematical equations for specific gravity, pump load, brake horsepower, three-phase power, distillation reboiler heat duty, log-mean temperature difference, exchanger heat duty, and compressor work. Four processing examples illustrate applications of the simplified estimation approach described.
