Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAH] in the environment---properties, origins, fate. (In French). M. Bouchez et al. Rev. Inst. Francais Petrole, May--June 1996, 51(3), 407--419.

The chemical structures and the main physico-chemical and biological properties of PAHs are presented and details are given of current knowledge with regard to the presence of these contaminants in the environment. Geochemical criteria of the different origins, pyrolytic, diagenetic and petroleum of PAHs are described. Also the respective contributions of their various sources of emission are discussed, as well as the transfer and diffusion in the environment, the modifications undergone and the ultimate fate of these compounds. 44 refs.
