Drilling technology, 2000. L. Offenbacher. JPT, May 1996, 48(5), 432, 434.

With reference to onshore drilling in mature fields, horizontal drilling, wellbore re-entry, and CT drilling are the three developing technologies that promise great benefits. Horizontal drilling technology---sometimes achieving 8000 to 9000-ft extensions with dual laterals thus reducing drilling costs to below those of a conventional `vertical' well of some 5 to 6 years ago. The greater potential for new technology offshore, to add value to drilling operations is also outlined. Multilateral drilling, and various additional advancements such as logging-while-drilling, geological steering, 3-D visualization techniques, slim-hole equipment, well planning, and technology integration are discussed.
