Consideration is given to policy assumptions in the Cold War era as they applied to petroleum resources, especially in the Middle East, and a number of more recent and still ongoing aspects are identified of states or regions endowed with oil and natural gas resources and the political problems they face. Oil and Islamic fundamentalism, oil and armaments, aftermath of the Gulf War, Gulf producer issues, and oil issues in the former Soviet Union are discussed.
