Planning produces smooth LAN design, installation at Mobil. A.I. Arroyo and E.M. Salinas-Titus. Pipeline Gas Ind., May 1995, 78(5), 21--26.

Implementation of a carefully planned local area network (LAN) by Mobil Pipe Line Co. in Texas is described. This boosts productivity and reduces computing costs. Initially the LAN procedure linked 60 personal computers but it soon expanded to about 200 PC users with interconnections to three mainframe computers and three UNIX-based servers. Development features of the network are discussed and the final LAN design is described and illustrated. Security risks in the storage of sensitive data increase as hardware and software become more affordable, implementation becomes easier, and the number of users increases. Built-in security features are reviewed. Operator training procedures are described and future expansion plans are discussed.
