This management perspective on Indian refining discusses the impact of deregulation on the industry. It is considered that it will depend to a large extent on the competitiveness of indigenous companies when ranked against international competition. The marketing infrastructure is discussed and the retail market is outlined. The lubricants market was opened up to private competition in 1991--92, since which 22 foreign brands have entered the market.
