Experimental measurements and thermodynamic modelling of paraffinic wax formation in undercooled solutions. J.A.P. Coutinho and V. Ruffier-Meray. Ind. Engng. Chem. Res., November 1997, 36(11), 4977--4983.
An experimental technique was developed to measure the solid/liquid equilibria below the cloud point in alkane/hydrocarbon systems. The crystallization of several synthetic mixtures of paraffins ranging from nonadecane to octacosane dissolved in ethylbenzene was promoted in an optical cell. Composition of the phases was determined by chromatography. The amoung of waxes formed and the cloud point were determined by DSC. Multiple solid phases were found to be present in complex mixtures. Aromatics were found to have no influence on wax formation or to cocrystallize with paraffins. Thermodynamic modelling was used to explain the results. 15 refs.
