Consumers Power intent on keeping customers happy. J. Share. Pipeline Gas J., January 1998, 225(1), 58--60.

Consumer Power Co. is described as Michigan's largest utility company and the nation's fourth largest gas and electric utility. Some major operational features are discussed. They include re-engineering, downsizing, and technology aspects. The latter are primarily due to the impact of computer technology. Applications involving the use of computers are discussed and the main challenge is described as occurring in automatic meter reading (AMR). The application of computerized AMR is described as being in the early stages and current procedures are regarded as expensive. Increasing numbers of strategic alliances between utilities and vendors are described as offering advantages to both sides.
