GIS---is it a money pit or a profit generator? R.H. Sutton. Pipeline Gas J., February 1997, 224(2), 58--59.

Evolving new technologies for data processing are reviewed with reference to automated mapping (AM), facilities management (FM), computer-aided design (CAD), and geographical information systems (GIS). The accuracy of GIS can be improved using smart pigs and global positioning systems but a careful appraisal of cost aspects is recommended before embarking on an AM/FM/GIS project. Pilot schemes should be carefully planned in order to avoid potentially expensive pitfalls. Extensive utilization of global positioning systems can also add unnecessary costs to data processing. Advice is given on improving the accuracy of GIS applications.
