Salt caverns show promise for nonhazardous oilfield waste disposal. J.A. Veil. OGJ, 18 November 1996, 94(47), 42--45.

An Argonne National Laboratory study is reported which indicates that the use of salt caverns for disposal of oilfield wastes is technically feasible and legal. The technical suitability of the practice depending on whether the caverns are well-sited and well-designed, carefully operated, properly closed, and routinely monitored. Regulatory considerations, cavern design, disposal operations, and closure and remediation are described. 7 refs.
