Performance of USDA H1 authorized fully synthetic lubricating greases. D. Loderer and S. Retzer. NLGI Spokesm., September 1997, 61(6), 18--23.

USDA H1 legislation controlling the use of lubricants in food-processing machines is discussed. Research work is described to determine the performance capabilities of a fluid gear grease, two rolling bearing greases, and an assembly paste. The limited number of thickeners and the base oils approved by USDA H1 are listed, and experimental results are described and illustrated. Results show that synthetic base oils provide a significant improvement in performance at low temperatures, and standard bearing rig tests show that the grease formulations are suitable for long-term lubrication requirements. 8 refs.
