Improve sulphur unit reliability. J.R. Braithwaite. Hydrocarbon Processing, August 1997, 76(8), 79--83.

Operational problems with the sulphur recovery unit in a Midwest refinery are discussed. The sulphur recovery and Claus offgas treatment units are described and illustrated. Four priority criteria failure scenarios that define preventive maintenance policies are tabulated. The main causes of unit failures are fouling, electrical, instrumentation, and human or procedural errors. Each of these causes is reviewed and a preventive/predictive maintenance programme is described. This extends the time between failures of the Claus offgas treatment units, reduces SO2 emissions, and improves operation of the sulphur recovery unit. A dramatic drop in monthly maintenance costs is reported.
