Solar power for Germany, US As one large solar park in Germany is finished in the north of the country, another has begun construction in the east. The former Perleberg military airport in Brandenburg, located halfway between Hamburg and Berlin, is now the home of a ground-mounted 35 MW solar PV park. The installation, from manufacturers Gehrlicher Solar, was constructed in two and a half months and connected to the grid in August. Gehrlicher Solar also built a separate 110 kV transformer station for the project due to its high capacity. The 90 ha park, pictured, comprises 144,000 modules, 39 inverters and around 500 km of cabling. Meanwhile in Saxony, a 15 MW system is being constructed by Gehrlicher Solar, also on the premises of a former military airport - Rothenburg. The Rothenburg IV plant will be built adjacent to the three existing Rothenburg I-III 22 MW solar parks. The park will be built on 25 ha of a 30 ha area, the rest of which will be used to create habitats for meadow-breeding birds. Finally, in California in the US, a 20 MW solar PV park has begun operation in Huron. The Pacific Gas and Electric project was completed in eight months as part of the utility’s five-year clean energy initiative, and contains a telecommunications component from NxGen Modular.
