The first phase of Morocco’s $9bn National Solar Plan, under which five solar generation plants with a total capacity of 2,000 MW are to be built by 2020, is being supported by a $200mn loan from the World Bank and $97mn from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF). The first facility is under construction in the Ouarzazate plateau, south of the Atlas Mountains. Using concentrated solar power (CSP) technology, the 500-MW Ouarzazate plant will have an initial 160-MW capacity and is due to come online in 2014.
