The Energy Institute (EI) event ‘Improving safety in petroleum storage facilities and distribution operations’ was held at the Hilton hotel in Coventry on 26 May, attracting over 50 delegates. The objective of the meeting was to facilitate learning and development in industry good practice in the fields of distribution, storage facilities, safety operations and regulatory compliance. Chaired by Alec O’Beirne FEI, presentations were given from the UK Health & Safety Executive, UK Petroleum Industry Association, EI Process Safety Survey, ABB Engineering Services, Resource Protection International, Amber Engineering Consultancy, Green Street Berman and Environ. A diverse range of topics were discussed, all of which were relevant to operators of downstream distribution and storage facilities in the UK and abroad. The agenda for the day was prepared and supported by the EI’s Distribution & Marketing Safety Committee (DMSC). The DMSC comprises safety specialists who, through activities and programmes, aim to continually improve the safety performance of petroleum industry distribution and marketing operations, and contribute to the responsible and sustainable operation of the industry. It provides a suite of technical publications for use by industry, covering a wide range operations including tank cleaning, terminal risk assessment, tanker loading and unloading, etc. Publications developed by the DMSC can be found at www.energypublishing.org For further information on the activities of the EI’s DMSC, or on other EI distribution and marketing activities, please contact Andrew Sykes, Technical Manager Distribution & Safety, at e: ASykes@energyinst.org
