UK nuclear industry gets green light from government inspector

The May 2011 report by the UK’s Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations, Mike Weightman, is now available on the Office for Nuclear Regulation website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/nuclear/fukushima/interim-report.htm. The full, more comprehensive report will be published in September 2011. The interim report states that flooding risks are unlikely to prevent the construction of new nuclear power stations at potential development sites in the UK. The extreme 9-magnitude earthquake and following tsunami that struck Japan are not seen as credible in the UK, which is 1,000 miles from the nearest fault line. The British reactor fleet has been given the all-clear and no need is seen to curtail the activities of existing or planned UK nuclear stations. Weightman could still amend the recommendations in his final report. News and updates on the implications of Fukushima for the UK are available at http://www.hse.gov.uk/nuclear/fukushima.
