Smith has been with Shell since 1983 and has worked in all the Group’s major businesses, including resourcing: ensuring there is a talented and diverse group of leaders for the top 200 jobs in the company.Much of his early careerwas in upstream oil and gas production; he lived for 4 years in Malaysia and Brunei. He has a degree in physics and is a chartered accountant. Speaking at the AGM, Smith said: ‘It has never been a more exciting time to be involved in energy. There is so much at stake - the world needs more energy and less carbon dioxide. The Energy Institute is at the heart of the energy challenge as a professional body that encourages debate, disseminates knowledge and builds skills. The Energy Institute is right up to date with the range of technologies that are going to be needed in a more energy efficient, lower carbon world.’
