The UK government has created a new Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), with Ed Miliband MP appointed as the Secretary of State. Previously, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) had responsibility for the UK’s energy strategy, while the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) dealt with the issues of greenhouse gases and energy efficiency. As part of the government reshuffle, Alistair Darling MP is Chancellor of the Exchequer; Peter Mandelson is the new Secretary of State for BERR; Hilary Benn MP is Secretary of State for Defra; and Geff Hoon MP is Secretary of State for Transport. The former Energy Minister at BERR, Malcolm Wicks MP, has been appointed Special Representative of the Prime Minister on international energy issues.
