More funding for tidal power research needed

A government select committee yesterday demanded that the government provide more funding for basic academic research into wave and tidal power to ensure that Britain is at the forefront of international moves towards renewable energy. Britain is particularly well placed to exploit wave and tidal energy because of its extensive coastline and strong tidal streams. Also, the relevant engineering expertise is already there, built up through decades of offshore oil and gas exploitation.
