PETRO-CANADA SAYS TO STAY IN NORTH AFRICA

Petro-Canada, which recently abandoned the goal of being a big international oil player, has no plans to abandon exploration in North Africa, according to a company official. Ron Brenneman, Petro-Canada's new chief executive, said earlier this month that the company had abandoned plans to become a big international oil player because it could pump out richer returns from its swathe of assets at home. The company is exploring its Tataouine acreage in southern Tunisia and had negotiated an extra one-year extension and was also awaiting clearance for development of its acreage in Algeria's Tamadanet block where five discoveries were made.
