North Sea decommissioning could cost UK taxpayer £3.6bn

British taxpayers could pay billions of pounds over the next 20 years unless the government and oil companies focus on decommissioning North Sea oil and gas platforms. Calculations carried out for the Financial Times by Hyperion Energy Consultants, an independent group specialising in oil platform decommissioning, show that the difference between implementing a laissez faire policy and a proactive strategy could be as much as £3.6bn.
