D Lu, Can electric cars kick the cobalt habit?, NewScientist, 29 February 2020, p 16
The rising sales of electric cars may be limited by the unavailability of cobalt for the lithium-ion batteries. Global demand for this heavy metal is estimated to rise to between 235 000 and 430 000 tonnes by 2030, and although short-term supplies appear adequate, future demands may be met only by cobalt recycling or using the oceans as a resource. Cobalt-free batteries are already planned, as in the Tesla, but their energy density is low.
