Eni opens bio-refinery in Gela

Eni has commissioned a new bio-refinery at Gela, Italy, that has a processing capacity of up to 750,000 t/y and will be able to treat used vegetable oil, animal fat, algae and by-products to produce high-quality biofuels.

Having already spent €294mn on converting the Gela petrochemical facilities to a bio-refinery, Eni plans to invest an additional €73mn for further preliminary activities and pre-treating biomass, which will supply the bio-refinery with ‘second-generation raw material, from waste, raw vegetable oil and advanced materials’.
