First Magnox station enters ‘care and maintenance’

The government’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) says it has granted permission for the Bradwell Magnox nuclear site in Essex to enter a ‘care and maintenance’ (C&M) phase, meaning that the site has been put in a safe and secure state until final clearance in around 60 years.

Said to be a first for the UK nuclear industry, the move is a significant milestone for operator Magnox and should provide experience for use over the coming years as the remaining 10 Magnox sites are decommissioned. Bradwell’s reactors were brought into service in 1962 and generated electricity for 40 years before ceasing in 2002.

Since then, all the nuclear fuel has been removed from the site and a large-scale decommissioning programme undertaken – all leading to the new C&M phase.

Although Bradwell will maintain its nuclear licence, the level of hazard and risk is so reduced that the frequent presence of ONR staff is not warranted, says the regulator, although it may choose to check Magnox’s inspection and maintenance work to ensure it is being done safely.

Bradwell will be monitored and inspected regularly until its final clearance, scheduled for 2083.
