First turbine at Hornsea One; Ørsted sells wind power direct

The first turbine at what will eventually be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm has been installed and is now producing electricity. When fully operational, the 1,200 MW Hornsea One offshore wind farm will be nearly double the size of the current world’s largest, Walney Extension, says developer Ørsted.

Located 120 km off the Yorkshire Coast the farm will comprise 174 Siemens Gamesa 7 MW turbines. Having set sail from Hull on 5 February, where the majority of blades were manufactured, the first turbine was installed just five days later.

The wind farm is a joint venture between Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners. The company began offshore construction just over a year ago, and expects the project to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.

Meanwhile, Ørsted is pioneering the use of power purchase agreements (PPAs) with large consumers to sell the electricity generated at its wind sites. The company has signed a 10-year agreement to supply 30% of Northumbrian Water’s electricity requirements from its 573 MW Race Bank offshore wind farm off the coast of Norfolk. The ‘corporate PPA’ will deliver around 100 GWh per year of fixed price electricity to Northumbrian sites in the North East, Essex and Suffolk.

Industrial gas supplier Air Products says it has also entered into a partnership with Ørsted for the supply of electricity to all of the company’s UK production sites.
