In UK, Thales Alenia Space in Belfast has designed the spacecraft propulsion module known as the Spacebus NEO Xenon Propulsion (XPS). This is a 1.8 m high, 3.6 m wide unit incorporating tanks of xenon propellant compressed to 125 bar, propulsion being five to ten times more efficient than a chemical system. Because of this, ‘skimsat’ satellites are emerging, flying low in 160-200 km orbits rather than the traditional 400-500 km.
