EI President Elect and former head of National Grid Steve Holliday FREng FEI described the combination of renewables and battery storage as a ‘game-changer’, contributing to a ‘chaotic revolution’ within the energy sector, in a speech to energy leaders at edie’s SPARK! conference in November.

A fundamental shift is taking place, he argued, from a supply-side industry to a demand-side industry, putting control and opportunity into the hands of commercial energy users.

Outlining how the increasing amount of small power sources being connected to distribution networks, especially wind and solar, has pushed the low carbon share of the UK’s electricity mix to 50%, he praised the positive impact of the Climate Change Act as ‘a good example of government doing what it should – setting overarching long term vision within which we can all operate’.
