Westminster launch for EI members' verdict on UK energy policy

Mixed fortunes for clean energy in the UK, an intensifying ‘fog of uncertainty’ around Brexit and scepticism about meeting carbon targets are some of the central messages dominating the fourth annual Energy Barometer, published by the EI in June.

The annual ‘state of the nation’ survey, representative of the EI’s 20,000 members working across the entire UK energy system, aims to articulate professionals’ expectations and concerns to inform policy-making in government and decision-making in industry.

In his Presidential overview to the report, Malcolm Brinded reflected the significance of its findings, saying: ‘The past year highlighted the accelerating pace of change in the UK energy system. But I am unable to conclude that we have shaken off past uncertainties. It is precisely because the stakes for our economic prosperity and social wellbeing are so high, and because energy professionals are best qualified to understand the complexities and trade-offs involved, that we should heed the picture painted by the Barometer.’

The report was launched by Louise Kingham, Steve Holliday and fellow Council member Dr Joanne Wade OBE FEI at a briefing event for industry figures, NGOs, policy-makers and parliamentarians at the opening of the EI’s Energy Systems Conference in Westminster.
