Petroleum Review July 2018

In this month’s issue we report that surging Chinese demand for LNG coupled with new market entrants and rising oil prices have held the threat of a supply glut at bay and the long-term outlook for gas is positive. We also take a look at the emerging market for floating LNG (FLNG), a concept that is on the cusp of becoming an established offshore gas development option.

Looking downstream, our power generation feature reviews how the growth of distributed renewable power generation with storage ‘at home’ or in businesses is set to pick up significantly in key global regions.

Meanwhile, Europe is slowly pulling the rug from under the feet of Europe’s remaining coal-fired power plants. We also report on an idea to use stranded gas, as power, with offshore wind infrastructure; and examine how drone technology is being utilised in the power sector for inspection and maintenance purposes. Our digital feature this month explains how increasing levels of grid-connected renewable energy penetration is presenting a problem for grid operators tasked with maintaining grid stability.

Our annual North American round-up suggests that although unconventionals continue to expand at a tremendous clip, especially in the US, a lack of access to global markets, regulatory red tape and high costs are stalling a recovery in the Canadian oil and gas sector.

We also highlight some of the key findings of the Energy Institute’s Energy Barometer 2018 report, which summarises the opinions of energy professionals surveyed on topical energy issues.
