Speakers from the worlds of government, industry and the media joined members of the EI’s Aberdeen, Highlands and Islands branch for their 30th annual flagship event in May.

The annual dinner heard from Faroe Petroleum CEO Graham Stewart, who gave an inspiring account of perseverance and overcoming the odds when setting up a business. Lord Ian Duncan of Springbank, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Scotland, gave an uplifting speech on the opportunities presented by Brexit. The audience was also entertained by BAFTA-award winning journalist Tim Sebastian, who made a strong case for a questioning, sceptical media in a world awash with fake news.

Summing up the evening, Branch Chairman Laurie Mackay CEng FEI said: ‘Whilst the industry still faces an uphill struggle to fully embrace the challenges which lie ahead, the insight shared by these leading speakers was invaluable in marking an era of cautious optimism, and the importance of the UK operating within a modern, global marketplace.’
